Brady Josephson and Andrew Olsen

With access to clean water remaining a pressing issue in our world, charity: water stands out as a beacon of innovation and change.

Brady Josephson, VP of Marketing and Growth (and a semi-regular guest on The Rainmaker show), shares insights into how the organization is transforming the way it engages with the world, driven by a relentless mission to provide clean water to every person on the planet.

In our conversation, Brady the power of curiosity, a trait that fuels his (and the entire team’s) approach to innovation at charity: water.

Working alongside the organization’s founder Scott Harrison, who embodies a non-traditional (read: non-nonprofit), commercial mindset, the team is unafraid to challenge the status quo. This mindset has led to groundbreaking initiatives like the new Experience Lab, a retail location in Franklin, Tennessee, designed to immerse visitors in the realities of the water crisis.

The Experience Lab is a testament to Charity Water’s commitment to innovation. This 60-minute guided journey takes visitors through the challenges of accessing clean water, using immersive storytelling and virtual reality to create a powerful impact. By engaging visitors for a full hour, the Experience Lab offers a unique opportunity to capture attention and inspire action in a way that traditional and digital marketing simply cannot.

A key insight that Brady shared in this conversation is how difficult it is for organizations to create and drive innovation when the demand for immediate and efficient profitability is so overwhelming in our sector.

One of the things that I appreciate in this conversation is that Brady emphasizes the importance of balancing innovation with their core mission of providing clean water. By understanding what truly drives the organization, charity: water focuses on big innovations that reinvigorate the brand and excite donors. This approach ensures that while the organization pushes boundaries, it remains grounded in its mission to make a tangible difference in the world.

charity: water’s journey of innovation and change is a powerful example of how nonprofits can leverage creativity and curiosity to drive impact. By focusing on what remains constant—the need for clean water—and embracing new ways to engage and inspire, charity: water continues to lead the way in transforming the nonprofit sector.
