At the recent Citygate Network 2019 Conference, I had the opportunity to interview my good friend and former client, Freddy Clayton. Freddy is the President at Orlando Union Rescue Mission. He spent the majority of his career practicing law in Orlando, then nearly five years ago was called to serve as President at the Mission. In our conversation he talks about that transition from the corporate world to the nonprofit sector. He also talks about OURM’s recent major capital campaign, and what he’s learned as a leader and fundraiser in the last half decade.
Just this week I interviewed for a position with a homeless center here in SW Florida. This interview you did with Fred was so good. I hope to meet him someday; I did send him an email. Several things he touched on were right on, “come and see”, handwritten thank you notes (hardly anyone does that any more), stories of those they have served, and on and on. Particularly liked his admonition to have breakfast with the “guests” once a week. Even using the word guest blessed me. Thanks ever so much. What sorts of things do you folks do in the way of providing services to nonprofits? BTW, I’ve been in development for the last 30 years and I LOVE it. Nothing better at least for me. Pete

Thanks so much for your note about this interview with Freddy! I’m glad it spoke to you. He’s a wonderful guy, and just great to be around. I do hope you get a chance to meet him at some point! And you’re right about so many of his points. Referring to people as “guests” rather than something like, “the homeless” just creates so much more dignity for every person they serve. It’s important. And his tips on how to engage with supporters were also spot-on.
What do I do? I do a few things, from speaking, leadership coaching, development team and individual training for nonprofit organizations, to building and running fundraising campaigns (major gifts, legacy giving, direct mail, digital, etc.). Feel free to drop me a line if you ever want to connect on any of these.
